Community Centre improvements in Horringer

Horringer Community Centre in Bury has seen a major investment in energy-saving measures, all aimed at ensuring the property is both more comfortable and cost effective for future users.

The Bury Free Press reports a total of £37,500 has been spent on major improvements to the community centre in Horringer-cum-Ickworth, with the provision of additional insulation for walls and loft spaces, as well as new LED lighting and a full rewiring.

It is hoped that the measures will serve to dramatically reduce the building’s future carbon emissions, as well as cutting between 20 and 25 per cent off future energy bills.

Community centre chair Wendy Cullingworth said: “The centre was built in the 1970s. The electrics were outdated, we had no thermal insulation and we had to rely on electric storage heaters.”

However, following the completion of works at the property, all those using the centre will now be able to do so with greater comfort and with lower running costs.

The work was made possible through considerable fundraising efforts by the members of Horringer Community Centre, while funding was also provided by Suffolk County Council, St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s Rural Initiatives Grant scheme and Havebury Housing Partnership.

Suffolk County Council councillor Terry Clements commented: “Horringer has such a fantastic community with a thriving calendar of events – and now it has a warm and brilliant community centre to match.”
